2008 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru "Les Serpentières; Domaine Patrick Javillier
smoke, Flint, earth, rocks, minerals, burnt matches, bright red fruits, fresh, balanced and with round, soft tannins. Focused, mineral, sleek, herbs, wild raspberry and red plum; great persistence and life to this. Good concentration and complexity; haunting and beguiling perfume; it cries out for food or rich cheese. Almost smells a bit like the snails you find in the vineyards with the morning dew. Garlic and herbs perhaps? Really mineral and lively; fresh, not at all cloying but with good light to medium body. Crushed rock; a bit of soil and farmyard that hints at what it will become. Clay pots and earthenware! Blood and raw red meat; iron ore. Very complex... Really good! Picking up more weight and power as it has time to breathe! ****(**+) or [4.5+4.5+4.5+4.5=18/20]

Jon, is this your second taste of this wine? I notice you blog had a note on this with the score 17.5/20. Looks like it's getting better!! Will seek out more.

Not necessarily getting better. Just a whole bottle over dinner as oppose to a small sample at the caveau! Thus giving it more air, more contemplation and more respect! I have no doubt that I will improve and be wonderful.

Opened the Javillier tonight, a bit tart and tight out of the gate, but after two hours this really starts to come together nicely, Nice nose of basil, strawberry, porcini, chalk and hints of soap, smooth on the palate, midweight, the acidity is still a tad tart, nose mimics the palate a solid burgundy for the price 90 points
But for me in the same price range the Boillot I tasted recently is a couple notches higher.
2007 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous la Chapelle
my first WTSO purchase and I kept my expectations low. I must say this exceeded them in a big way. Though still a youngster, this wine was firing on all cylinders. The nose was explosive and complex. I sniffed this for 5 minutes before even tasting. Lots of ripe strawberry, truffle, forest floor and earthy notes. On the palate, fresh acidity, very balanced, smooth until the finish where tannins begin to tighten up slightly.
A bit new and old world. Fantasic 92 points
But for me in the same price range the Boillot I tasted recently is a couple notches higher.

Nice notes,
The Boilot sounds good, and I would say that the difference in complexity, is the vineyard. Volnay has brilliant 1er Crus, whereas Savigny has a couple of which this is the least-known but historically the most famous.
