So what have you bought lately?

Post by jckba »

I believe it is time to start one of my favorite threads in what have you purchased lately?

I picked up 2 cases of 2003 Leoville Barton @ $99/btl from Wide World of Wines on 10/8 during one of their Bordeaux clearance sales as they continue to unload inventory before the store changes hands.

I bought 6 bottles of wine this weekend.

- A local supermarket is being bought by another chain and so were doing a close-out sale. I bought one bottle each of Taittinger, Moët & Chandon, and Pommery for about 17 euros apiece.
- I bought a bottle of 2012 Domaine Mourguy, Irrouléguy in a Basque shop in Bordeaux. You can see the Espelette peppers hanging out on the front to be seasoned. http://www.pierreoteiza.com/reseau/bordeaux/bordeaux
- I bought a bottle of 2010 Ch. Sainte Selve, red Graves and a bottle of 2009 Ch. Monconseil Gazin, "Grande Réserve" AOC Blaye (a stop up from Côtes de Blaye).

Gosh, this month I have hardly bought any wine. A case of '04 Pol Roger Blanc de Blanc, single bottles of NV Krug, '93 Pichon Lalande (I thought it was the '83 when I bid on it), '99 Damilan Barolo Liste, '05 Les Cailloux CdP, a couple of NV Pol Roger, and four bottles of petite chateau Bordeaux to taste in in preparation for selecting wines for a BBQ.

Buying very little lately.
1 bottle of 2010 Nipozzano Chianti to go with some tomato sauce dinner that evening.
2 bottles of 1979 Palmer was my only real purchase the last 2 months.
I'm also drinking a lot less

2006 D'Armailhac, 2012 Friedrich Becker Weisser Burgunder 2012, 2004 Pape Clément, 2004 Haut-Bailly, and 2003 San Leonardo. I never tasted a San Leonardo -C. Sauvignon, C. Franc, Merlot- before, but for € 45,- one should expect an interesting wine. I will report.

Oh, yeah, PC. I have a few hundred bottles there. Fortunately, most are not in yet. Good thing as I don't have much empty space in my wine room.

From what I understand it is changing hands and Hugo is taking over. I am guessing that inventory had to be taken down to a certain level hence the turn back the clock pricing on their most recent offers. While I am not sure what is left here is the email I received earlier today:

This is the last list from Elliott. Enjoy!

Please note the quantities available on the left. Wines listed as 6pk and/or cases can only be purchased by the 6pk/case, not per-bottle.

JKBA,

Do you have contact info. Site listed through google down ...maybe related to transfer of hands. Would be interested in some of the issues depending on availability for Florida delivery.

Thanks

I'm waiting on 371 bottles from PremierCru ;-) though they have 11 in stock which I may swing by to pick up soon.

Recent purchases I've made, in Bordeaux, include:
Six bottles of '10 Fleur Cardinale at $39 from some online store that's now out of stock of it, so the cheapest online is now $49. It is a gem of a wine, especially after long decanting. This is one I wish I had bought more of for sure.

I also splurged on a six-pack of '09 Eglise Clinet that I got for a very nice price. I just couldn't resist the prospect of drinking something described (by Jeff Leve) as "Picture every grape wearing a cashmere sweater"....:-) this is normally far outside of my drinking pricepoint but I may just have to treat myself.

Some 2012 Bordeaux futures:
Rauzan Segla (I love this producer, though it's typically a bit on the pricey side)
Angelus (I got it at a good price, but may still be too pricey for me to drink).

With some enabling from jkcba, 1 case of 2005 Larcis Ducasse. Of course, the only reason I bought this was the estate's upgrading to premier cru classe, so it should be better than before.

Two bottles of 1982 Pichon Lalande and two bottles of 1995 Chapoutier Hermitage Pavillon (and of course, a few bottles of Champagne for normal day to day consumption). Except if Marjorie asks, I haven't bought anything.

Wide World of Wines seems to be closed, dropped by the other day and the sign said they would be reopening on November 1.

Elliot Staren, Wide World of Wine. Only one offer from them, none before, none since (by post card - this was early 1990s). Eighteen bottles of 1947 Cheval, mint condition, not fake. At 1/3 below going rate at the time. I did take a couple, but I'm still kicking myself for not sucking up the whole lot, or at least a case. That was before I learned to take a second mortgage on the house for an offer like this. Actually, if I had taken the offer and kept most of them, I could have bought another house by now.

I have taken a fair bit out of storage which has involved paying VAT and duty in some instances.

I took out

3 x Angelus 1995
3 x Figeac 1998
3 x Cheval Blanc 2001
6 x Giacosa Barbaresco Asili Riserva 1996
6 x Giacosa Barbaresco Asili 1999
Cases of a Chateau Belair 1998, Certan De May 1998 and Haut-Bailly 1998
A half case of Climens 1998
A case of Bachelet Monnot Puligny Folatieres 2009
A case of PYCM Saint Aubin Chatinieres 2010

I also bought some bottles of a Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia 2010
A half case of Elio Grasso Barolo Garvarini Chimera 2006
A case of Brovia Ca Mia 2006

One wants to drink well over Christmas and either side of Christmas.

Including Thanksgiving. And early November. I am also thinking about January. February is on the horizon. March is good, too.

Actually, at my age I want to drink well all the time and resent those weeks when I am somewhere that drinking well is not practical.

Tom

We had a Piedmont lunch a couple of weeks ago, and we did a mini vertical of Giacosa Asili: 2001, 1999 and the 1996 Riserva.

They need more time but are very promising. Do you remember the two wines we drank in 2008 at the warm up dinner in NYC. The 1996 AR was in the same league.

As one attendee noted: There was a stand-out wine, Ian"s Asili Riserva 96, which seems to have entered a level of perfection which one hopes will last for many years.

I would say drink from 2016 or 2020
